Air India Express Expands Fleet Rapidly Under Tata Ownership.

Under Tata Group’s leadership, Air India Express has transformed into one of India’s largest low-cost carriers, significantly expanding its fleet and operations. When Tata took over Air India and its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express was primarily focused on Gulf routes with a fleet of just 26 Boeing 737-800NG aircraft. However, in a strategic move to consolidate its aviation business, the group has merged its four airlines into two distinct categories—one full-service and one low-cost airline.

As part of this restructuring, Air India Express has nearly quadrupled its fleet size, surpassing 100 aircraft. This milestone makes it the third Indian airline to operate a triple-digit fleet, joining IndiGo and its parent company, Air India. The rapid expansion has positioned Air India Express as one of the fastest-growing airlines in the country.

Originally an all-Boeing operator, the airline now operates a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft. The Airbus additions have come not only from the merger with erstwhile AirAsia India but also from Air India, which has transferred 11 all-economy aircraft to Air India Express. This transfer, which includes Airbus A320neo aircraft, signals Tata’s commitment to strengthening the airline’s capacity and network.

Currently, Air India Express operates a diverse fleet of 102 aircraft, comprising 25 Airbus A320ceo, 13 A320neo, 26 Boeing 737-800, and 38 Boeing 737 MAX 8. With this growth trajectory, the airline is expected to play a crucial role in Tata Group’s broader aviation strategy, expanding domestic and international connectivity while maintaining its position as a leading low-cost carrier in India.
