Airlines to Share International Passenger Data with Customs from April 2025.

Starting April 1, 2025, airlines will be required to mandatorily share details of international passengers with Indian Customs authorities. This new directive aims to enhance security and streamline the monitoring of foreign travelers entering and exiting the country. Non-compliance with this requirement could result in significant penalties for airlines, highlighting the importance of adherence to the new regulations.

According to a recent communication from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), all air transport service providers operating flights to and from India will need to register with the National Customs Targeting Centre-Passenger (NCTC-Pax) by January 10, 2025. This registration will allow airlines to comply with the new data-sharing requirement.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by Indian authorities to strengthen the country’s security framework and improve customs processes. By mandating airlines to submit passenger information in advance, the Indian Customs authorities will have the ability to better track travelers and enhance risk management. This will also help authorities in combating various security and tax-related issues.

The move comes in response to the growing need for better coordination between airlines and government agencies. By having access to passenger data, Indian Customs can take proactive measures to ensure that individuals who may pose a risk are flagged for further investigation before they arrive or depart.

For airlines, this new requirement will entail incorporating the sharing of passenger data into their operations. This could involve technological upgrades and adjustments to their existing systems to ensure seamless communication with the NCTC-Pax. Failure to meet the deadline or comply with the regulations will result in penalties, which could add significant financial pressure on airlines already managing complex operations.

As the deadline for registration approaches, airlines will need to ensure they meet the requirements in a timely manner to avoid disruptions in their operations. For passengers, while the changes are primarily administrative, it is essential to be aware that this step aims to improve the safety and efficiency of international travel to and from India.
