Ethiopia Begins Work on Africa’s Largest Airport in Bishoftu.

Ethiopia has officially kicked off construction of the Bishoftu International Airport, set to become the largest airport project in Africa. Envisioned as a fully integrated “Airport City,” the facility will combine cargo hubs, hotels, commercial zones, logistics parks, and maintenance units, aiming to transform aviation and travel infrastructure across the continent.

  • Landmark Airport City Concept
Led by Ethiopian Airlines in partnership with the Ethiopian government, the airport will serve as a multifunctional hub integrating passenger terminals, cargo facilities, and commercial zones.
  • Distinctive Architectural Design
UK-based Studio Zaha Hadid Architects is spearheading the construction. Each airport pier will feature a unique design and color palette, representing the diverse regions of Ethiopia.
  • Central Spine Layout
The terminals are organized around a “central spine” inspired by the Great Rift Valley, designed to minimize transfer times and optimize passenger flow between terminals.
  • World-Class Passenger Amenities
Bishoftu International Airport will offer outdoor areas with native plants, airside hotels, diverse dining options, and other modern amenities to enhance the travel experience for transiting passengers.

The project positions Ethiopia as a leading aviation hub in Africa and is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity, logistics, and tourism.
