Indian flyers can look forward to an exciting year ahead in 2025, with significant developments in aviation set to enhance their travel experience. One of the most notable advancements is the highly anticipated launch of the Noida International Airport (Jewar Airport) in Delhi NCR. Tentatively set to begin operations on April 17, 2025, this new airport will feature one terminal building and a single runway, with a passenger handling capacity of 12 million annually. This new addition to the Delhi region’s infrastructure is expected to alleviate some of the pressure on the already over-capacity Delhi and Mumbai airports. On the opening day, major airlines like IndiGo and Akasa Air are expected to launch domestic flights from the airport, marking a new chapter for air travel in the region.
In addition to the new airport, IndiGo, India’s largest carrier, is making significant strides to expand its international footprint in 2025. The airline, which already has an impressive fleet, has placed an order for 944 aircraft as of November 2024. One of the key acquisitions in IndiGo’s growth strategy is the A321XLR, a narrowbody aircraft capable of flying non-stop to destinations in Western Europe, Africa, and Australia. This aircraft, which made its first flight in November 2024, will allow IndiGo to offer long-haul flights on narrowbody planes, making international travel more affordable. IndiGo is set to be the largest customer for the A321XLR, with deliveries expected to begin in 2025.
Moreover, IndiGo has also signed a deal for 30 A350 widebody aircraft, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027. These widebody planes will significantly enhance the airline’s capacity for long-haul international flights. However, IndiGo is not waiting for the A350s to start expanding its European network. The airline is expected to borrow several Boeing 787 aircraft from a European carrier, which will allow it to begin flights to Europe in early 2025. The first of these leased 787s is expected to arrive in February 2025.
These new developments—expanded flight options, new international routes, and a growing fleet—are expected to result in cheaper international tickets for Indian passengers. IndiGo’s increased presence in international markets, along with improved flight options, is set to make long-haul travel more accessible and affordable for Indian flyers. With more airlines, modern aircraft, and improved infrastructure on the horizon, 2025 promises to be an exciting year for aviation in India.
