The Indian Navy’s first indigenous Cadet Training Ship, built by L&T Shipyard, was launched at Kattupalli in Chennai in the presence of Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan. Named Krishna, the vessel marks a major step in strengthening India’s indigenous naval training infrastructure and maritime capability.
About the Ship:
The cadet training ship Krishna is the first of three vessels being built under a contract signed with the Ministry of Defence on 07 March 2023.
Purpose & Role:
Its primary mission is to provide basic sea training to naval cadets, preparing them for operational service.
Crew & Capacity:
The ship will accommodate 20 officers, 150 sailors and 200 cadets, making it a dedicated training platform.
Multi-Role Capability:
Secondary roles include hospital ship duties, HADR missions, Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations (NEO), and Search and Rescue (SAR).
Ceremonial Launch:
The ship was launched by Anupama, President of DWWA, in line with maritime customs.
Indigenous Defence Boost:
The project reflects India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing and modern naval training assets.
