The Indian Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth INR 26,000 crore (approximately $309.71 million) with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the procurement of 240 AL-31FP aero engines. These engines are intended for the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft, a vital component of the Indian Air Force’s fleet. This contract is a significant step in strengthening India’s defense capabilities and promoting self-reliance in military manufacturing.
The AL-31FP engine is an upgraded version of the AL-31F, specifically designed for the Indian Su-30MKI fighter jets. It features thrust vectoring capability, which enhances the aircraft’s maneuverability and performance in combat. The engines will be manufactured by HAL’s Koraput Division in Odisha, a facility renowned for its expertise in producing advanced aero engines. This move aligns with the government’s “Make in India” initiative, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and boosting indigenous production.
A notable advancement of the AL-31FP engine is the inclusion of a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system, replacing the older analog hydro-mechanical system. The FADEC system provides more precise control over engine functions, resulting in improved performance, better fuel efficiency, and enhanced safety and reliability. These enhancements are crucial for optimizing the aircraft’s capabilities in high-stress combat situations.
By securing this contract with HAL, the Indian government reinforces its commitment to modernizing the defense sector and strengthening national security.
