IndiGo has proposed to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) a gradual increase in pilots’ weekly rest period, with the plan set to begin in June 2025. The airline has expressed its desire for a step-by-step implementation of the change to ensure minimal disruption to operations. However, IndiGo has also raised concerns about any proposed increase in the “night duty window,” the period between 12 am and 5 am, during which stricter fatigue management regulations apply. The airline argues that expanding this window could have a “severe operational impact.”
This proposal comes after the DGCA revised the flight duty time limitation (FDTL) norms in January 2024 to improve fatigue management for pilots. Under the updated regulations, the weekly rest period for flight crews was increased from 36 hours to 48 hours. Additionally, the “night duty window” was extended from 12 am–5 am to 12 am–6 am, making it a critical issue for airlines, as this window restricts the hours during which flights can be scheduled and increases operational challenges.
IndiGo’s request for a phased increase in the rest period reflects the airline’s efforts to strike a balance between improving pilot well-being and maintaining operational efficiency. While the airline supports measures to enhance fatigue management, it has highlighted the potential negative impact on its operations if the “night duty window” were to be extended further, especially in a market with high demand for air travel.
As the DGCA continues to review these proposals, the aviation industry will closely watch the developments, as changes to fatigue management regulations can have far-reaching implications on flight schedules, crew availability, and airline operations across India. For IndiGo, the goal is to meet regulatory requirements while ensuring that its operational needs are met in a competitive and challenging environment.
