New Pilot Duty and Rest Hours to Be Implemented from July 2025: DGCA to HC.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) informed the Delhi High Court on Friday that the proposed norms concerning pilot duty and rest hours could only be implemented from July 2025. The rules, which are part of the revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) guidelines, will be introduced in a phased manner from that date.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the DGCA, stated that the civil aviation regulator plans to notify the revised FDTL norms by July 2025. These updated regulations, which were first issued in January 2024, aim to provide pilots with increased rest time, ensuring they are well-rested and alert during flights, thereby reducing the risk of accidents and enhancing flight safety.

The revised duty and rest hour rules are a critical step in improving pilot safety standards. The implementation, however, has already been delayed by more than six months. The phased implementation plan will allow airlines and pilots time to adjust to the new regulations, ensuring that the changes are effectively integrated into daily operations.

These changes to pilot duty and rest periods are essential for addressing fatigue, a significant factor that can lead to aviation incidents. By ensuring adequate rest for pilots, the DGCA hopes to enhance aviation safety and reduce the risks associated with pilot fatigue. The full rollout of these norms is expected to significantly contribute to safer air travel in India.
