Qatar Airways Plans Major Widebody Order A350 or 777X?

Qatar Airways is set to finalize a major order for wide-body aircraft as part of its long-term expansion strategy. The airline’s Chief Commercial Officer, Thierry Antinori, confirmed the development in a statement to Reuters on March 3, 2025, highlighting the carrier’s commitment to maintaining a strong and competitive fleet.

The upcoming order, which is expected to be substantial, will involve a request for proposal (RFP) with aircraft manufacturers. While Qatar Airways has not disclosed specific details, industry speculation suggests the airline may choose between the Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X to enhance its fleet capabilities.

Qatar Airways has long been a key operator of both Airbus and Boeing wide-body jets, with the A350 and 777 family playing a crucial role in its global operations. The airline was previously engaged in a dispute with Airbus over surface degradation issues on some A350s, but the matter was later resolved, potentially reopening the door for future Airbus orders. Meanwhile, Boeing’s 777X program has faced delays, though it remains a strong contender for airlines seeking advanced long-haul aircraft.

As Qatar Airways continues to expand its global footprint, the airline’s next major fleet acquisition will be closely watched. With increasing passenger demand and the need for fuel-efficient, next-generation aircraft, the upcoming order is expected to reinforce the airline’s position as one of the world’s leading carriers.
