Singapore to Host World’s First Open Fan Engine Airport Testbed.

Singapore has taken a major step in sustainable aviation with the announcement of the world’s first airport testbed dedicated to next-generation aircraft propulsion technologies. The initiative was unveiled by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) through a landmark partnership aimed at supporting future aircraft operations.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on February 2, 2026, during the third Changi Aviation Summit, positioning Singapore as a global leader in advanced aviation innovation.

Global first:
The project will establish the world’s first airport-based testbed focused on next-generation propulsion systems.

Testing locations:
Trials will be conducted at Changi Airport (SIN) and Seletar Airport, supporting real-world operational testing.

Technology focus:
A core element of the program is the Open Fan engine architecture, which eliminates the traditional engine casing.

Efficiency benefits:
The Open Fan design allows a larger fan diameter, helping reduce aerodynamic drag and improve fuel efficiency.

Sustainability push:
The initiative supports Singapore’s long-term goal of advancing sustainable and low-emission aviation technologies.
