India’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) has proposed using two Su-30MKI jets as flying testbeds to speed up the certification of indigenous aircraft engines. The move is aimed at reducing dependency on foreign testing platforms and accelerating development timelines.
According to officials, deploying twin Su-30MKI aircraft will allow simultaneous in-flight testing under varied operational conditions. This approach is expected to significantly enhance data collection, improve validation processes, and support faster refinement of engine performance and safety parameters.
The proposal aligns with India’s broader push for self-reliance in aerospace technology under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). By leveraging an already proven and versatile fighter platform, GTRE aims to optimize resources while ensuring rigorous testing standards.
If approved, the initiative could play a key role in advancing indigenous engine programs, strengthening India’s defense aviation ecosystem, and boosting confidence in locally developed propulsion systems.
