The Lufthansa Group has announced plans to significantly increase its ownership in ITA Airways, moving closer to full control of Italy’s national airline. The German aviation company will raise its stake from 41% to 90% through a new investment deal valued at €325 million.

The acquisition of the additional 49% share is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2027, subject to approvals from European and U.S. regulatory authorities. Lufthansa stated that ITA Airways has already become closely connected with the group’s operations as its fifth network airline.

Several integration measures are already active between the two carriers, including shared booking platforms, Miles & More loyalty program access, Star Alliance membership benefits, airport lounge connectivity, and expanding cargo cooperation. Lufthansa says passengers are already experiencing a more unified travel network across Europe and international destinations.

Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr described the process as the “fastest airline integration” in the company’s history. Meanwhile, Italy’s Ministry of Economy and Finance will continue to hold the remaining 10% stake for now, which Lufthansa may acquire in 2028 as part of its long-term expansion strategy.
