United Airlines has officially taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR, marking a significant milestone more than six years after placing an order for 50 of the long-range narrowbody aircraft in December 2019. The delivery represents another major step in the airline’s ongoing fleet modernization program.
The aircraft is configured with 150 seats across three cabins, including 20 new United Polaris lie-flat business class suites, 12 Premium Plus seats, and 118 Economy seats. Passengers will also enjoy advanced onboard features such as 4K OLED entertainment screens, Starlink Wi-Fi connectivity for MileagePlus members, and wireless charging in the Polaris cabin.
United plans to use the A321XLR on long-haul international routes that can be served more efficiently without larger widebody aircraft. Among the first routes expected to be operated by the new jet are Newark–Bogotá and Newark–Edinburgh, both of which have traditionally been served by the Boeing 757-200.
The arrival of the A321XLR is part of a wider fleet transformation strategy. United expects to receive more than 250 new aircraft by 2028, including 28 A321XLRs and additional premium-configured A321neos. With this delivery, United becomes the second U.S. carrier to operate the Airbus A321XLR, following American Airlines.
