The pilot-in-command of Air India flight AI2379, which experienced a sudden loss of around 300 feet in altitude during severe turbulence on August 4, underwent a post-flight psychoactive-substance screening after the aircraft landed in Delhi.
According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, the pilot’s preliminary screening result was reported as “not negative.” The sample has now been sent for confirmatory testing to establish the final result.
Both pilots have been de-rostered pending the investigation, while the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is examining the incident, which has been classified as a serious incident.
Importantly, a “not negative” preliminary result does not confirm that the pilot was under the influence of alcohol or drugs while operating the flight. The final laboratory test and investigation are still awaited.
Several passengers and crew members were injured during the turbulence, although the aircraft later stabilised and landed safely in Delhi.
