Airbus and Tata are exploring the possibility of exporting the C295 military transport aircraft from India, marking a significant step in the country’s ambitions to become a global hub for aerospace manufacturing. The collaboration is part of the broader “Make in India” initiative and underscores India’s growing capabilities in defense production.
The C295 program, which involves the production of 40 aircraft domestically, is already underway at a state-of-the-art facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, managed by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). The facility, a joint venture between Airbus and Tata, represents a landmark project in India’s defense manufacturing sector, making the country an integral part of the global aerospace supply chain. The C295 is a versatile medium-lift military aircraft widely used for tactical transport, disaster relief, and medical evacuation.
India has already ordered 56 C295 aircraft to replace the aging fleet of Avro aircraft used by the Indian Air Force. Of these, 16 will be manufactured in Spain, while the remaining 40 will be produced in India by the Tata-Airbus partnership. The move to explore exports is a natural progression, leveraging India’s cost-effective production capabilities and engineering expertise.
The potential for export is vast, given the aircraft’s reputation for reliability and its ability to operate in challenging environments. It can carry up to nine tons of cargo or 71 troops, and its short takeoff and landing capabilities make it suitable for remote and unpaved airstrips. Airbus officials have expressed optimism about the export potential, emphasizing that the Vadodara facility is designed to meet not just domestic but also international demand.
