Akasa Seeks Exemption for CAT-III Pilots from Fog Mandate.

Akasa Air has formally requested the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for an exemption from the mandate requiring the deployment of CAT-III trained pilots on flights to and from two major fog-affected airports, Kolkata and Bengaluru. The airline’s appeal comes in light of a shortage of such specialized pilots within its roster, which is a growing concern as fog-related disruptions become more frequent during the winter months.

The CAT-III (Category III) trained pilots are certified to operate flights under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) during low visibility conditions, including dense fog, which is common at airports like Kolkata and Bengaluru during winter. This certification is crucial for ensuring the safety and smooth operation of flights when weather conditions are less than optimal. However, Akasa, in its request to the DGCA, has highlighted the challenge of fulfilling this requirement due to the current shortage of CAT-III qualified pilots in its workforce.

According to sources, Akasa’s plea seeks temporary relief from the rule, specifically during periods of high fog density, as the airline looks to manage its operations without compromising safety. The shortage of qualified pilots has been exacerbated by a competitive job market, with many experienced pilots being sought after by multiple airlines, further complicating recruitment efforts.

In response to the request, the DGCA is likely to assess the airline’s operational capabilities and consider whether adequate safety measures can be implemented without the mandatory presence of CAT-III trained pilots. The DGCA may also look into whether Akasa’s other qualified crew members and technological support systems can compensate for the shortage.

This move by Akasa comes as part of the airline’s ongoing efforts to navigate operational challenges while ensuring the safety of its passengers. If granted, the exemption could provide Akasa with the flexibility needed to manage its flight schedules during periods of severe fog while working towards building its roster of CAT-III trained pilots in the long term.
