Alaska Airlines Expands Global Dream.

In late March 2026, an Alaska Airlines pilot named David boarded a Embraer E175 at Portland International Airport alongside his mother for a long-awaited journey to Japan during cherry blossom season. The trip carried special meaning for David, marking the first time in his nine-year career flying Alaska aircraft that he would cross the Pacific aboard his airline’s own long-haul aircraft.

After connecting through Seattle, the pair boarded Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner painted in Alaska’s Aurora Borealis livery. The aircraft still reflected elements of Hawaiian Airlines heritage following the merger between the two carriers, featuring Hawaiian-inspired cabin themes, ukulele music, tropical refreshments, and premium business-class suites originally branded as Leihōkū Suites. Alaska has recently begun introducing Pacific Northwest-inspired branding and amenities as part of its transition strategy.

The airline’s international business-class product features fully lie-flat seats in a 1-2-1 configuration with direct aisle access and 4K entertainment screens, placing it among the top premium experiences offered by U.S. airlines. Although the 787 fleet currently lacks onboard Wi-Fi, SpaceX Starlink connectivity is expected to arrive in late 2026. Interestingly, David’s connecting Horizon Air flight already featured Starlink internet service, offering passengers a preview of future long-haul connectivity plans.

The flight to Tokyo Narita symbolized more than just a vacation. It highlighted Alaska Airlines’ transformation into a growing global carrier. The airline now serves international destinations including Tokyo, Seoul, Rome, and London from Seattle, with plans to expand to 12 global destinations by 2030 supported by a growing fleet of 21 Boeing 787 aircraft.

For David, who spent nearly a decade flying narrowbody routes across the West Coast, the journey represented a personal and professional milestone. As the aircraft touched down in Tokyo, he witnessed how far both his airline and his own career had evolved.
