American Airlines has bid farewell to its most senior pilot, Captain John Higley, who retired after a remarkable career spanning more than four decades with the airline.
The emotional moment took place on June 3 as Captain Higley prepared to operate his final flight, American Airlines Flight 112 from Miami to Barcelona. Before departure, the crew contacted Miami Air Traffic Control Tower and informed controllers that the airline’s number one seniority pilot was about to make his final takeoff from the airport.
Recognizing the significance of the occasion, the tower controller delivered a heartfelt farewell message. “John, I want to wish you a great and joyful retirement. Thank you for the service you provided from Miami International Air Traffic Control Tower. Smooth skies ahead of you, and you are cleared for takeoff,” the controller said.
Captain Higley responded with gratitude, thanking the controllers for their support over the years. The special farewell was also acknowledged by other flight crews waiting for departure, with one crew simply signing off with, “Happy retirement.”
The touching exchange has since captured the attention of aviation enthusiasts, highlighting the respect and admiration earned by Captain Higley throughout his distinguished flying career.
