The Civil Aviation Ministry has set up a coordination committee to reallocate airport slots vacated after large-scale flight cancellations by IndiGo in December. The move is aimed at optimising airport capacity and minimising passenger disruption following the government’s decision to curtail the airline’s operations.

The panel was constituted through an official order dated January 22 and has already finalised the framework and guiding principles for redistributing the freed-up slots.

  • Coordination Committee Formed
The committee is chaired by Joint Secretary (Airports) Rubina Ali and includes officials from key aviation stakeholders to ensure smooth and transparent slot redistribution.
  • First Meeting Already Held
The panel held its first meeting on January 13, during which the process and principles for reallocating airport slots were finalised.
  • Trigger: IndiGo Flight Disruptions
The decision follows widespread flight disruptions in early December, which caused significant inconvenience to passengers across the country.
  • 10% Operational Curtailment Ordered
On December 9, 2025, the government directed a sharp 10% reduction in IndiGo’s flight operations, citing internal mismanagement as the primary reason.
  • Impact on Flight Operations
Prior to the curtailment, IndiGo was operating nearly 2,200 flights per day, making the redistribution of vacated slots critical for maintaining airport efficiency.
  • Focus on Passenger Interest
The ministry said the move is aimed at preventing further disruption and ensuring optimal utilisation of airport infrastructure.
