British Airways has withdrawn a proposed incentive scheme that would have linked part of pilots’ pay to reductions in fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Under the proposal, pilots could have received up to 1% of their basic salary if a collective target of 60,000 tonnes of CO₂ savings was achieved against a 2025 baseline.
The British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) confirmed that the proposal was removed following consultation with its members. The original plan also stated that flight safety and the commander’s authority would always take priority over commercial or environmental considerations.
