The Supreme Court of India has been informed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation that the government is actively examining concerns over sharp airfare fluctuations and rising ancillary charges by private airlines. The submission came during the hearing of a public interest petition seeking regulatory guidelines to curb sudden fare spikes.
The court observed that steep ticket price increases during peak travel periods and festivals appear “exploitative” for passengers. A Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta granted the Centre four weeks to complete its internal deliberations and present the outcome.
The government told the court that a comprehensive review is underway to explore possible regulatory measures while maintaining a balance between market dynamics and passenger interest.
The move could lead to clearer fare transparency rules and stronger oversight of additional charges, aimed at protecting consumers without disrupting airline operations.
