China Achieves Milestone in Hydrogen Aviation Engine.

China has reached a major milestone in next-generation aviation technology, successfully completing full-performance ground tests of a megawatt-class liquid hydrogen-powered engine. The breakthrough marks the country’s first aviation engine to meet megawatt-level performance standards using liquid hydrogen, signaling a step forward in sustainable aviation.

The engine, known as the AEP100 turboprop, has been independently developed by the Aero Engine Corporation of China. Testing was carried out by its Hunan Aviation Powerplant Research Institute in Zhuzhou, where ignition and performance adjustment trials were conducted under controlled ground conditions. Reports confirmed that all systems, including the liquid hydrogen transport mechanism, operated normally and the engine maintained stable performance throughout.

Liquid hydrogen is considered a key fuel for the future of aviation due to its high energy density and zero carbon emissions. The successful testing of the turboprop engine demonstrates the technical feasibility of hydrogen-powered flight and represents a breakthrough in core technologies related to liquid hydrogen turbine propulsion.

This achievement positions China among the leading nations exploring clean aviation solutions and highlights growing global efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the aerospace sector.
