Emirates Could Order 100 More Airbus A380s.

Emirates President Sir Tim Clark has renewed his call for Airbus to revive the A380 programme, suggesting the airline could purchase up to 100 additional superjumbos beyond replacing its existing fleet.

Clark’s vision includes a modernised A380 featuring next-generation engines, redesigned wings, improved aerodynamics and technology inspired by aircraft such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787. He estimates these upgrades could reduce operating costs by approximately 25%, making the aircraft more competitive with modern twin-engine jets.

According to Clark, the A380 was Emirates’ most profitable fleet asset during the previous financial year, demonstrating the aircraft’s continued importance to the airline’s operations.

However, restarting production could be challenging. Clark revealed that Airbus had previously indicated an order of 100 aircraft would not be sufficient to justify reviving the programme, with around 250 orders potentially required to make it financially viable.

Although Airbus ended A380 production in 2021, Emirates expects to operate its existing fleet until around 2041. Clark believes there is still a strong market need for high-capacity aircraft capable of carrying large numbers of passengers.
