A special moment unfolded onboard a Southwest Airlines flight as veteran pilot Jim Curtis completed one of his final journeys with a passenger announcement that turned into a heartfelt family tribute.
After 43 years in aviation — including 21 years in the United States Air Force and 22 years with Southwest — Jim retired after logging more than 18,000 flight hours.
His daughter Julia followed in his footsteps, inspired by childhood visits to her father’s base at Travis Air Force Base. She later joined Southwest through the airline’s Destination 225° pilot pathway program and became the airline’s 200,000th employee.
During the flight, Julia took the cabin microphone and revealed to passengers that the captain flying the aircraft was the same person who inspired her aviation dream — her father. Jim responded with humor, joking that although his daughter now has a full-time job, she was “still on my phone plan.”
After landing in Oakland, a special celebration welcomed Captain Curtis, with cheers and tributes as he stepped off the aircraft in uniform for the final time.
Jim said the moment represented more than retirement — it was about passing knowledge, experience, and passion from one generation of pilots to the next.
