The U.S. Air Force says the first of two new Boeing-built VC-25B presidential aircraft is expected to receive electrical power in its new configuration before the end of 2026. The milestone will precede the aircraft’s planned first flight in 2027 as Boeing continues major modification and testing work on the 747-8-based jet.
The Air Force is acquiring two VC-25Bs to replace the existing VC-25A presidential aircraft. The new jets are undergoing extensive modifications in San Antonio, including upgraded electrical systems, secure communications, defensive capabilities, medical facilities and a specialized executive interior designed for the presidential mission.
The program has faced significant delays from its original schedule, but the Air Force and Boeing are now targeting 2028 for delivery of the first permanent VC-25B. Boeing says the program has moved beyond the design phase and is currently focused on modifying and testing the aircraft.
The future aircraft will also feature the Air Force’s updated red, white, blue and gold executive-airlift livery. Meanwhile, a separate former Qatari Boeing 747-8 is serving as the temporary VC-25B Bridge aircraft, providing presidential airlift capability while the two permanent Boeing-built aircraft are completed.
