HAL–GE engine deal nears execution stage.

India has moved a step closer to indigenous production of advanced fighter jet engines as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and GE Aerospace finalised a key technical agreement for the F-414-INS6 turbofan engine. The development marks a crucial milestone in India’s military aviation programme and aligns with ongoing efforts to boost domestic defence manufacturing.

The F-414-INS6 engine will power three major indigenous combat aircraft programmes — the HAL Tejas Mk-2, the Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter, and the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. These platforms are central to strengthening the operational capabilities of both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy in the coming decades.

With this agreement in place, the groundwork has been laid for technology transfer and domestic manufacturing of the engines. This is expected to enhance India’s self-reliance in critical aerospace technologies while also supporting the growth of the local defence industrial ecosystem.

The F-414 engine offers higher thrust and improved performance compared to earlier variants, making it a vital component for next-generation fighter jets. The HAL–GE collaboration is being seen as a strategic step towards reducing import dependency and advancing India’s position in global aerospace manufacturing.
