IATA Warns Passengers To Leave Bags Behind During Emergencies.

A new study has revealed that four in ten airline passengers would attempt to take their baggage during an emergency evacuation, raising serious safety concerns across the aviation industry.

In response, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched its “Save a Life, Not a Bag” campaign, urging travelers to leave all belongings behind and evacuate aircraft as quickly as possible through the nearest available exit.

The study found that while 80% of passengers believe they know how to react during an emergency, only 61% correctly understood that carry-on luggage should be left behind. Aviation officials warn that even a few seconds spent retrieving bags can delay evacuations and put lives at risk.

IATA has stated that passenger education remains the primary focus, but stricter measures, including penalties or locking overhead bins during emergencies, could be considered if behavior does not improve. The campaign is supported by both the FAA and EASA and also advises passengers not to film emergencies or block aisles and exits.
