India has taken a major step toward strengthening its aerial warfare capabilities as the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved the development of indigenous unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This move is expected to significantly enhance the country’s stealth strike and surveillance capabilities in modern warfare scenarios.
The approved program focuses on designing and building advanced combat drones within India, aligning with the government’s push for self-reliance under the “Make in India” initiative. These unmanned systems will be equipped with cutting-edge stealth features, precision strike abilities, and intelligence-gathering technology, allowing the IAF to conduct high-risk missions without endangering human pilots.
Defence experts believe that these indigenous UCAVs will play a crucial role in future conflicts, especially in contested environments where manned aircraft may face higher risks. The drones are expected to complement existing fighter jets by carrying out reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and targeted strike operations with greater efficiency.
With this approval, India joins a select group of nations working on advanced stealth combat drone technology. The development is also expected to boost the domestic aerospace industry, create new opportunities for innovation, and strengthen the country’s long-term defence preparedness.
