Indian Air Force Boosts Indigenous Engine MRO Capability.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is taking a significant step toward strengthening its self-reliance in aircraft maintenance by planning to establish an indigenous Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub for F-404 engines. This initiative is being developed in collaboration with GE Aerospace, the original manufacturer of these engines.

The F-404 engines power several key aircraft, including the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. By setting up a domestic MRO facility, the IAF aims to reduce dependency on foreign support, cut turnaround time, and improve fleet readiness. This move is also expected to enhance operational efficiency and long-term cost savings.

The proposed MRO hub will focus on advanced repair, overhaul, and lifecycle support of engines within India. It aligns with the government’s “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives, promoting indigenous defense capabilities and boosting the domestic aerospace ecosystem.

This collaboration between the IAF and GE Aerospace is likely to bring advanced technology, skill development, and employment opportunities in the aviation sector. It marks another milestone in India’s journey toward becoming a global hub for aerospace maintenance and defense manufacturing.
