India’s Widebody Aircraft Shortage Raises Concerns.

India’s rapidly growing aviation market is facing a major challenge due to a limited number of widebody aircraft, a situation described as a “scandal” by Willie Walsh. Speaking to the BBC, Walsh highlighted that the country currently operates only around 50 widebody planes despite its massive market size and rising demand.

Widebody aircraft, which are larger twin-aisle planes designed for long-haul and international routes, play a crucial role in expanding global connectivity. The shortage of such aircraft has restricted Indian carriers from operating more non-stop international flights, limiting their competitiveness against global airlines.

Walsh is set to take over as the chief executive of IndiGo in August, following the completion of his tenure at the International Air Transport Association. His remarks underline the urgent need for Indian airlines to invest in widebody fleets to tap into long-haul market opportunities.

With India emerging as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally, addressing this gap will be critical. Expanding the widebody fleet could significantly boost international connectivity, passenger capacity, and the overall growth of the country’s aviation sector.
