The Tamil Nadu government is set to float a tender within the next month to identify a developer for the ambitious ₹20,000 crore greenfield airport project at Parandur, located around 70 kilometers west of Chennai. This move marks a key step forward in the state’s efforts to bolster aviation infrastructure and ease congestion at the existing Chennai International Airport.
Sources indicate that the Centre’s in-principle approval for the project is expected imminently, paving the way for formal processes to begin. The tender will focus on bringing on board a suitable airport developer to take the project from planning to execution, in alignment with international standards.
Meanwhile, land acquisition for the proposed site is progressing swiftly. According to officials familiar with the matter, the compensation offered to affected landowners is notably generous—five to six times the prevailing market value. This is seen as a significant factor in facilitating smooth land acquisition and reducing resistance from local stakeholders.
The Parandur airport is expected to be a major infrastructural milestone for Tamil Nadu, designed to handle a large volume of passengers and cargo, and to position the region as a key aviation hub in South India. Once completed, it will serve as a critical complement to the existing airport, supporting the state’s growing economic and logistical needs.
