Police in Kochi have added an attempt to murder charge against a passenger accused of trying to open the emergency exit of a Batik Air flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi, damaging a window panel and threatening fellow passengers and cabin crew.
The incident involved Jamsheer Athanikkal of Palakkad, who was travelling on Batik Air flight OD231. According to police, he allegedly attempted to force open the aircraft’s emergency exit during the flight, creating a serious safety risk for everyone onboard. Cabin crew members intervened and restrained him.
The passenger was arrested after the aircraft arrived at Kochi. The case was initially registered under charges including criminal intimidation, violation of aircraft safety directions and acts endangering public safety. Police later added the attempt to murder charge, stating that his actions could have endangered the lives of other passengers.
Authorities are now investigating the motive behind the incident. During initial questioning, the passenger allegedly told police that he had felt like dying while on the flight. Officials are also examining his health history and have proposed a medical assessment to determine his mental condition.
Police plan to seek custody for further questioning and will record statements from passengers and cabin crew as part of the investigation.
