Southwest Jet Makes Surprise World Cup Cameo

A routine airline departure unexpectedly became part of World Cup history during the tournament’s opening match at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. Viewers watching the game between Qatar and Switzerland noticed a large shadow briefly sweeping across the pitch, drawing curiosity from fans around the world.

The shadow was later identified as belonging to a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 operating flight WN3698. The aircraft had departed from San Jose International Airport and was climbing toward its destination in San Diego when its flight path took it directly over the stadium in Santa Clara.

Located just a few miles from the venue, San Jose International Airport regularly sees aircraft passing over the area. However, the timing of this particular flight coincided perfectly with the World Cup broadcast, allowing the aircraft’s shadow to briefly appear on live television in front of a global audience.

While the flyover was entirely unplanned, it created a memorable aviation moment during one of the world’s biggest sporting events. For a few seconds, Southwest Airlines received a level of international exposure that no advertising campaign could have arranged, turning an ordinary flight into an unexpected World Cup cameo.
