During its operational service, the legendary Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird faced an estimated 4,000 surface-to-air missiles, yet not a single one successfully hit the aircraft.
Soviet forces repeatedly attempted to intercept the high-speed reconnaissance aircraft, deploying MiG-25 Foxbat and later MiG-31 Foxhound fighters, along with surface-to-air missile systems and complex ambush tactics.
The SR-71’s greatest advantage was not simply speed. Flying at around 85,000 feet and travelling at more than Mach 3, the Blackbird could cover roughly 36 miles every minute. By the time a missile reached its predicted position, the aircraft could already be far away.
When missile threats were detected, the crew relied on the aircraft’s electronic countermeasures while the pilot accelerated away from the danger zone. Soviet interceptors repeatedly struggled to reach the Blackbird’s combination of altitude and speed.
Twelve SR-71s were ultimately lost during the program, but none were shot down by enemy action. The aircraft was retired in 1998 and remains one of the most remarkable achievements in aviation history.
Designed by Kelly Johnson and the Lockheed Skunk Works team, the SR-71 continues to be remembered as a masterpiece of aerospace engineering and one of the most extraordinary aircraft ever built.
