Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger is set to be inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame Class of 2026, an honour often described as the “Oscars of aviation.” The ceremony will take place on September 24 in Washington, D.C., recognizing his decades-long contributions to aviation.
Sullenberger became internationally known for safely landing US Airways Flight 1549 on New York’s Hudson River in 2009 after both engines lost power, saving the lives of everyone aboard. His career also includes service as a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, nearly three decades as an airline pilot and later work promoting aviation safety, including serving as the U.S. Ambassador to ICAO.
The induction comes during a significant personal year for Sullenberger, who recently revealed that he has been diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. He has spoken publicly about his experience and his determination to continue raising awareness and supporting others facing the condition. He will be inducted alongside astronauts Shannon Lucid and Peggy Whitson, among other aviation and space figures.
