Tamil Nadu has moved closer to establishing a greenfield airport in Hosur, with two locations shortlisted for further evaluation. This decision followed a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, where the Airports Authority of India (AAI) was directed to conduct a detailed feasibility study of the identified sites.
The shortlisted locations, situated within a 20-kilometer radius, were selected after a thorough assessment by a multidisciplinary team from AAI and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO). This evaluation, conducted in September, examined four potential sites to determine their viability for the ambitious project aimed at enhancing connectivity in the region.
One of the proposed sites is near an existing private airstrip, while the other lies approximately 10 kilometers south of Hosur, near Thogarai Agraharam. These locations emerged as the most promising based on preliminary evaluations. Meanwhile, the interim report highlighted that three other sites—Shoolagiri, Dhasapalli, and one near a waterbody—were unsuitable due to a range of constraints, including environmental and logistical challenges.
The new greenfield airport is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting the growing demand for air travel in Tamil Nadu. Hosur, with its strategic location and industrial significance, has long been considered an ideal choice for enhancing regional connectivity and boosting economic growth. The proposed airport is anticipated to not only ease congestion at existing airports but also catalyze development in the surrounding areas.
The detailed feasibility study by AAI will assess various factors, including environmental impact, land acquisition requirements, and operational efficiency. Once completed, the findings will be presented to the state government for final approval, marking a significant step forward in the project’s development.
As Tamil Nadu continues to invest in aviation infrastructure, the Hosur greenfield airport represents a key milestone in the state’s vision to strengthen its transportation network and foster economic growth.
