Edwards AFB, California – The United States Air Force Test Pilot School (USAFTPS), a cornerstone of American military aviation excellence, has officially integrated a new aircraft into its rigorous curriculum, marking a significant evolution in the way future test pilots, flight test engineers, and mission specialists are trained.

The school has introduced the Bombardier Global 6000, a modified business jet designated as the X-60A, into its flight test program. The aircraft, equipped with advanced avionics, modular payload bays, and test instrumentation systems, will be used for instruction in systems evaluation, avionics testing, and high-altitude flight research.

According to Lt. Col. Adam “Switch” Alpert, Commandant of USAFTPS, the new aircraft fills a critical capability gap. “With the X-60A, we’re not only expanding our students’ exposure to modern flight test techniques, but also preparing them to operate and evaluate systems aboard next-generation aircraft — both manned and unmanned.”

The Global 6000 joins a diverse fleet that includes legacy jets like the F-16 Fighting Falcon and C-12 Huron, as well as rotary and unmanned platforms. Its addition allows students to test large-aircraft systems without relying solely on aging platforms or external partnerships.

The integration comes at a pivotal moment as the Air Force and Space Force emphasize rapid acquisition, prototype testing, and cutting-edge aerospace technology. The school’s updated curriculum now includes simulated multi-domain operations, electronic warfare scenarios, and integration with autonomous platforms — supported by the Global 6000’s advanced suite of sensors and communications systems.

“This aircraft is not just a tool, it’s a flying classroom,” said Maj. Rachel Thomas, an instructor at USAFTPS. “It offers hands-on experience with mission systems typically found on ISR, command-and-control, and electronic warfare aircraft — which is critical for our future test leaders.”

The aircraft’s entry into service follows months of modifications and validation at Edwards Air Force Base. Instructors say the jet’s performance, reliability, and adaptability make it a valuable platform for test design and evaluation missions.

As USAFTPS continues to adapt to evolving mission demands, the integration of aircraft like the Global 6000 reflects a broader shift toward multi-role, tech-forward training that aligns with 21st-century airpower challenges.
