American Airlines has taken delivery of its 100th Boeing 737 MAX 8, with Boeing marking the milestone by wrapping the aircraft in a ceremonial blue bow.
The special delivery comes during American Airlines’ 100th anniversary celebrations, creating what Boeing described as a “double 100”—celebrating both the airline’s centenary and its 100th 737 MAX.
The blue ribbon also pays tribute to history, recreating the moment in 1987 when American received its 100th McDonnell Douglas MD-80, known as the “Super 80,” with a nearly identical bow. Following the 1997 merger of McDonnell Douglas and Boeing, the latest delivery continues that long-standing manufacturing legacy.
While the MD-80 became one of American’s most iconic aircraft, the modern 737 MAX 8 represents a new generation of aviation technology, offering around 20% lower fuel consumption and serving as a key part of the airline’s fleet of more than 1,000 aircraft.
