A former Thai child pop star has filed a lawsuit against Singapore Airlines, alleging a wooden splinter from a satay skewer served in Business Class became lodged in her throat during a flight from Singapore to Los Angeles in July 2024.
According to court filings, Briohny Smyth allegedly swallowed a broken piece of the skewer while eating her in-flight meal, causing choking and severe coughing before she later expelled a 1.5-inch wooden shard.
The lawsuit claims medical specialists found scarring and trauma to her vocal cords consistent with a sharp foreign object. Smyth alleges the injuries have permanently affected her ability to sing, speak professionally, and work as a performer, resulting in lost income, ongoing pain, and emotional distress.
The case has been filed in a Los Angeles federal court, where Smyth is seeking compensation for medical expenses, lost earnings, and other damages. Singapore Airlines has not publicly commented on the lawsuit.
