SriLankan Airlines flight UL503, operating from Colombo to London Heathrow, was diverted to Frankfurt, Germany, after a major technical failure at the UK’s air traffic control provider NATS disrupted flight operations on September 8, 2026.
The failure affected NATS’ flight-processing system and caused widespread delays and cancellations across the UK, with more than 1,000 flights disrupted. NATS said a fix was implemented at around 16:40 local time, but the disruption continued as aircraft and crews were left out of position.
Major airlines, including Ryanair and Wizz Air, strongly criticized NATS over the incident, while the UK Civil Aviation Authority said it expects a full report into the system failure.
The disruption also affected flights across Europe, highlighting how a technical problem within the UK’s air traffic control network can have significant knock-on effects on international operations.
