A civilian contractor pilot was rescued from the Pacific Ocean at night after his Hawker Hunter fighter jet lost engine power during a U.S. Navy training mission off the California coast.
The pilot reported losing thrust before ejecting from the aircraft, which crashed around six miles northwest of Morro Bay. A Navy MH-60S Seahawk helicopter located and rescued him roughly 40 minutes later despite darkness and fog.
The pilot was taken to a hospital in Fresno and was later reported to be in good condition with no significant injuries. The aircraft was being used as an adversary aircraft to support realistic Navy training exercises.
