U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has highlighted the FAA’s new SMART air traffic management system, assuring that human controllers will remain responsible for managing U.S. airspace.
SMART combines data from around 200 sources, including weather, flight paths, traffic levels and controller staffing. The AI analyzes the information to predict congestion and potential disruptions, allowing FAA personnel to consider adjustments before delays develop.
The system began limited operations around Washington, D.C., on September 21, covering Reagan National, Dulles and Baltimore/Washington airports. SMART does not control aircraft or replace controllers, and its recommendations must be reviewed by FAA personnel. A wider rollout is planned, although its nationwide effectiveness remains to be demonstrated.
