Singapore Airlines is preparing to retire its iconic open-toed cabin crew sandals, introducing new closed-toe wedge shoes for female flight attendants from January 2027. The change marks a notable update to the airline’s famous “Singapore Girl” image.

The new footwear has been designed in collaboration with Singapore footwear brand PAZZION. Made from genuine leather, the shoes feature cushioned lambskin insoles for added comfort and support. Different colours will represent different crew ranks.

Currently, female cabin crew wear closed-toe slingback shoes during takeoff and landing, switching to the signature sandals during the cruise phase of a flight. Under the new arrangement, crew members will wear the closed-toe wedges throughout the entire flight, ending the long-standing two-shoe routine.

Safety is a key reason behind the change. Closed-toe footwear offers better protection against hot spills and falling objects while providing additional support during onboard duties. Singapore Airlines previously introduced closed-toe slingbacks in 2001 following a footwear safety review.

The airline’s distinctive sarong kebaya uniform was adapted by French designer Pierre Balmain in 1968 for Malaysia-Singapore Airlines. The design continued with Singapore Airlines after the two airlines separated, becoming one of the most recognizable uniforms in global aviation.

Although the new shoes will retain elements of the airline’s signature style, the retirement of the sandals marks the end of a familiar tradition for cabin crew and aviation enthusiasts worldwide.
