Air India has come under public scrutiny after its internal grooming guidelines for cabin crew surfaced online, triggering debate over cultural expression and workplace policies. The controversy follows a similar backlash recently faced by Lenskart over its employee style guide.
The airline’s handbook reportedly restricts the use of tikka and sindoor on the forehead, stating they are not permitted as part of the uniform. While bindis have not been completely banned, the guidelines impose clear limitations on their use, which has led to criticism from sections of the public.
According to the policy, cabin crew members may wear a small 5mm bindi, but only when dressed in a saree. The airline further clarified that bindis are not allowed with its Indo-Western uniform, highlighting a distinction based on attire rather than a blanket prohibition.
The issue has sparked wider discussions around balancing corporate dress codes with cultural identity. As debates continue, the airline’s stance reflects an effort to maintain uniformity in appearance while navigating sensitivities around tradition and personal expression.
