Alaska Airlines has officially started construction on a new $135 million maintenance hangar at Portland International Airport, marking a major investment in its operational and maintenance infrastructure. The facility will strengthen the airline’s ability to support its growing fleet and network.
The new complex will include approximately 125,000 square feet of aircraft maintenance space, along with an additional 60,000 square feet dedicated to offices, engine and machine shops, sheet metal facilities, and support areas. The hangar is being built adjacent to the airline’s existing Horizon Air maintenance facility at Portland Airport.
A key feature of the project is its widebody aircraft capability. Once completed, the facility will be able to accommodate up to three narrowbody aircraft or two widebody jets simultaneously. This expanded capacity will help Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, whose mainline fleet is now maintained by Alaska following their merger, return aircraft to service more quickly and reduce pressure on maintenance operations in Seattle.
Portland remains one of Alaska Airlines’ most important hubs, with the airline and Horizon Air accounting for around 40% of all flights at the airport. The project is expected to create more than 100 permanent maintenance and engineering positions, while also generating approximately 200 construction jobs during the development phase.
