The Federal Aviation Administration> (FAA) is investigating a close call involving two Delta Air Lines aircraft at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport late Monday night.
According to officials, Delta Flight 1568, arriving from Pittsburgh, initiated a go-around after the crew determined the runway was not clear because another aircraft had not exited in time. As the aircraft climbed away from the runway, Delta Flight 2472, departing for Rochester, New York, crossed ahead of its flight path.
The two aircraft came within approximately 1,800 feet horizontally and 600 feet vertically, prompting Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) alerts in both cockpits. Air traffic control recordings captured one pilot exclaiming, “My goodness,” as the warnings sounded.
Controllers quickly issued instructions to separate the aircraft, and both flights continued safely without injuries. The FAA has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
