DGCA Mandates 60% Free Seats on Flights.

Directorate General of Civil Aviation has directed airlines to offer at least 60% of seats on every flight without any additional charge, starting April 20. The move aims to ensure fair access for passengers and improve transparency in seat allocation policies across the aviation sector.

The decision follows instructions from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which emphasized the need for more passenger-friendly practices. A revised Air Transport Circular issued on March 20 makes it mandatory for airlines to clearly display free seat availability and related conditions on their booking platforms.

The regulator has also advised airlines to seat passengers booked under the same PNR together, wherever possible, enhancing convenience for families and groups traveling together. Airlines are currently preparing to implement the updated guidelines before the deadline.

At present, only around 20% of seats are offered free, while others attract charges ranging from ₹200 to ₹2,100 depending on seat type and location. The new rule is expected to significantly reduce extra costs for passengers and bring greater transparency to airline pricing practices.
