India’s aviation regulator has proposed stricter action against disruptive behaviour on flights, allowing airlines to directly impose a 30-day ban on unruly passengers. The move aims to ensure onboard safety, maintain discipline, and eliminate delays caused by lengthy investigation procedures under the current system.
Direct ban power for airlines:
Under the new draft rules, carriers will no longer need to wait for an inquiry committee to act against misbehaving passengers.
Change from existing process:
At present, a complaint leads to a probe panel, during which airlines can impose a temporary ban of up to 45 days.
Zero-tolerance policy:
Directorate General of Civil Aviation aims to strengthen safety, protect passengers and crew, and maintain order inside aircraft.
Acts that can trigger the ban:
Smoking onboard, consuming alcohol on domestic flights, tampering with emergency exits, or using life-saving equipment without permission.
Focus on faster action:
The proposal is designed to enable quick decisions and deter in-flight misconduct.
