Malta has officially registered its first-ever Boeing 777-300 converted freighter, also known as the “Big Twin,” marking a significant milestone for the aviation industry in the country. The aircraft was registered by the Malta-based Challenge Group, which now adds this impressive freighter to its growing fleet. Prime Minister Robert Abela hailed this achievement as an “important milestone,” noting that it contributes to the growing number of registered aircraft in Malta, which currently stands at 920.

During a press conference at Challenge Group’s SkyParks offices on Friday, Prime Minister Abela highlighted that the number of registered aircraft in Malta has doubled over the past five years, underscoring the nation’s growing importance in the global aviation sector. The newly registered Boeing 777-300 freighter adds to the Challenge Group’s existing fleet of three Boeing 767 freighters, further solidifying the company’s position in the cargo aviation industry.

In addition to discussing the success of Challenge Group, Prime Minister Abela also praised the company for providing local employment, with around 140 workers currently employed by the group. He also touched on Malta’s labor migration policy, aiming to address the high turnover rates of third-country national workers, and emphasized its role in positively impacting local employment and workers’ rights.

Abela also spoke about Malta Vision 2050, a long-term plan designed to drive sectors toward digital and green transitions. He outlined plans to continue improving the quality of the country’s human resources through reskilling and upskilling, aiming for a focus on creating skills rather than just jobs. These efforts are expected to contribute to Malta’s economic growth and global competitiveness in the years ahead.
