India is moving a step closer to future aerial warfare as the Indian Air Force is considering acquiring up to 100 advanced loyal wingman drones. The plan focuses on boosting manned-unmanned combat capabilities for enhanced mission effectiveness.
At the National Defence Industries Conclave (NDIC) 2026, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited official Jasbir Singh highlighted key developments under the Combat Air Teaming System (CATS) program. The spotlight was on the CATS Warrior, an unmanned combat aerial vehicle designed for next-generation warfare.
The CATS Warrior is a 2.2-ton stealth drone built to operate alongside fighter jets as a “loyal wingman.” It can assist in surveillance, strike missions, and high-risk operations, reducing the exposure of human pilots in combat zones.
With growing interest from the IAF, this program represents a major leap in India’s push toward advanced, technology-driven air combat systems and self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
